One of the joys of being a homeowner is having friends and family come over and stay for the weekend or the entire season (hello, summer!). If you love hosting guests as much as we do, creating a beautiful guest bedroom helps ensure a memorable visit.

The Linen Duck, a furniture store in Franklin TN, shares its favorite decorating tips for the guest bedroom.

Create a relaxing space and keep it clutter-free

Offer your guests a neat and organized space they can retreat to. This room should ideally have an empty dresser and a clean closet where they can store their belongings. Have a nightstand ready for their bedside needs.

Lighting should be carefully planned, too. Consider having bedside task lighting and overhead lighting.

Invest in premium beddings

Studies have shown that how well you sleep is connected to how good you feel, which suggests that the quality of the beddings can affect sleep quality. Have at least 2 sheet sets, 2 pillows for twin beds, 4 pillows for a full/queen size bed, 6 pillows for a king-size bed, one duvet and a cover, one summer blanket, and a bed skirt if you’re using only a bed frame.

Pay attention to thread count, which measures the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It’s a rough indicator of the softness and feel of the sheets. As a rule of thumb, comfortable sheets have thread counts ranging from 200 to 800 and beyond. There’s no magic number for the perfect thread count; at the very least, look for sheets with an advertised thread count of 200. Anything lower than that won’t feel as soft.

When shopping for blended sheets, always look for higher cotton to polyester ratio. Avoid satin-style sheets made of polyester; these can irritate the skin. Light, airy, and cooling linen sheets are perfect for summer; these are always worth the investment.

Add well thought out and intentional details

A guest bedroom is a place where you can put personal touches such as fresh flowers, scented candles, or your favorite books. Your guests would surely appreciate a handwritten note.

While fresh flowers are always recommended, silk floral arrangements can be just as welcoming and are easier to maintain. The Linen Duck has some of the best in-store; do check them out on your next visit.

Your guests have surely prepared for the trip, but have extra pairs of socks, toiletries, and a spare phone charger ready just in case.
